Alexis & Silas’ Very Rainy Engagement Session

Hello, everyone! It’s been a hot minute since I posted an engagement session so here we GO! Alex and Silas were much like many of my other couples stating, “We’re super laid back and are game for whatever…” I love that about my couples…they hire me and just let me do my thing so we can make photography magic together! What I did not expect, was for Alexis to want it to be semi-dark, with lights on…AND 110%…no 150%…game for photos IN THE RAIN! So, before I get too far ahead of myself, please give this NEW COUPLE all your warm welcomes and Hannah Barlow Photography love. Their engagement session is on the blog right now! Enjoy!

So, Alexis and I chatted about her visions for this session. These two happened to get engaged on this very bridge after meeting last year at their young adult group!! If you’re familiar, you know EXACTLY where we are located for this session. I haven’t been on this bridge in YEARS! She wanted the lights on…it was set to rain…and she was 100% dedicated to making this session happen – rain or shine. SO, Okay! Let’s do this! If you know me, I’m not afraid of much! The wind was whipping and the rain was coming but we did manage to get some typical, traditional Hannah Barlow portraits with all that color pop!

THAT did not last long…and it was at this point I was humbled and remembered how much I loathe heights. And lightning. Combine those two things with this metal bridge…Hannah was having a moment! HA! BUT…like any good wedding photographer who is used to shooting in whatever you are given in any scenario…we powered through as the storm approached. Let’s walk!

I planned to head close to cover…and we just kept on taking pictures too! Not thinking, I should have brought my camera rain jacket. I honestly can’t remember the last time I used it…and I hate that thing. Cover was necessary though! More walking…I very much enjoyed being on this pathway rather than the center I could see through!

A small part of the bridge was creating some cover for us and some safety against the wind. Most gals would be freaked if their hair was getting wet and wind blown…not Alexis! Together these two just laughed and smiled!

I planned to utilize this wall!! I told them I was going to make a lot out of nothing! Just a sidewalk and a good, stone wall! Can’t beat it!

And that storm sure did approach fast and was more than I could have imagined! These two SHOCKED me…and they just laughed and danced and made the absolute BEST memories. Does this not look story (romance) book worthy?!

Then, for safety purposes and to keep my camera alive and well (it DID survive), we did make a dash for cover and had a little chat about the wedding (which is going to be amazingly intimate and laid back), about the photo gallery and how all the things work. Then, we got right back down to it! Plot twist, the storm was raging…and these two were dancing…and smiling…and the laughter probably echoed!

My camera can only take so much though so we went back over for a few more portraits!

…and just like that…the storm let up! We headed back to the center of the bridge and we finished off with some more colorful, less wet (well, we were all wet…but the wetness wasn’t coming much from the sky anymore) photos! And we had a great laugh…because that rain short circuited our brains and I couldn’t get them posed…and they didn’t know how I wanted them…and we all just…laughed. THAT is what I want to do with my couples and because of that…anything can happen at their wedding! It’s going to be GREAT!

Check back in September, not long from now, for their intimate backyard (tent on a farm) wedding. I had one last year just like this AND in September and it was one of my favorites of the year…so let’s do it again!
